Teaching Philosophy & Experience
Over the past ten years, I have taught middle school geography, American History, and world cultures in diverse public schools in Minnesota, workshops and courses for practicing teachers on curriculum development and technology integration across thirty-five public school districts in Wisconsin, and secondary social studies methods courses and student teaching seminars for pre-service teachers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and The College of William & Mary. I also coached varsity women's and men's track for five years and varsity football for three years, served on numerous committees and boards, and mentored and advised students. In any learning situation, I try to create an environment where all views are respected and deliberation of ideas is encouraged. Students and teachers with whom I have worked have remarked that my energy, knowledge, and sense of humor make my classes enjoyable, thought provoking, and applicable to their lives and/or profession. I also enhance my teaching and student learning through the use of technology - I find trying to understand how people think with new technologies both challenging and fascinating. For example, last spring a student and I constructed the E-Portfolio Help Desk to provide resources and help for School of Education students as they construct their e-portfolios. For more information on my teaching experiences, you can download a copy of my cv (pdf file). For the pre-service teachers in our secondary social studies program, I want to instill the desire to teach all students in a way that challenges and engages them, and in a manner befitting our great profession. My courses emphasize models of best practice in the social studies, utilizing the Powerful and Authentic Social Studies (PASS) framework, theoretical and historical underpinnings of history and social studies education, and elements of social justice, anti-racist and democratic education. The overall goal is to best prepare future teachers for classrooms of diverse students (racial, ability, class, etc.) in diverse contexts (urban, rural, affluent, poor, etc.)Below are links to documents and sites related to some of my teaching experience.
